You can use your smartphone to make payments if your device is compatible with a contactless system called FeliCa (‘Osaifu Keitai’ compatible devices). Android devices that are purchased in Japan should support this, and iPhones 8 and above have it built in.
If your phone supports FeliCa, you can link your MobalPay card to apps that allow contactless payment, like Mobile Suica, which can be used in conjunction with ApplePay.
If your device doesn’t support FeliCa, you may be be able to link your MobalPay card to apps like Rakuten Pay (R Pay) and PayPay*. These will allow you to make payments via a barcode or QR code, rather than contactless technology built into your phone.
*PayPay limits MobalPay users to a spending limit of ¥5,000 per month, so you may find that Rakuten Pay is more convenient for you.
