Using an ATM to top up your MobalPay account can seem a little daunting, especially if you\u2019re new to Japan. That\u2019s why we\u2019ve put together some guides for topping up using cash<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, did you know that you can make the process even easier for yourself in future transactions?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many banks allow you to create a \u2018Transfer Card\u2019, which will allow you to skip a lot of the steps in our guide, and get straight to the top-up. Follow the process below to get yourself a card, and save yourself a whole lot of time in future!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once again, we\u2019ve used Mizuho Bank as our example, as they offer an English-language service. For that reason, we\u2019d recommend them to new residents in Japan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How To Get Your Transfer Card at <\/span>a <\/span>Mizuho Bank<\/span> ATM<\/span><\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Select \u2018<\/span>English<\/span><\/b>\u2019 to change the language setting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. When asked to choose a transaction type, choose \u2018<\/span>Transfer<\/span><\/b>\u2019.<\/span> At this stage, you may also see a notice to say the transfer will complete the next business day, depending on what time of day it is.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. When shown a screen warning about insurance claims and scams, choose \u2018<\/span>Next<\/span><\/b>\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. When asked to choose a transfer method, choose \u2018<\/span>Transfer Using Cash\u2019<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Choose \u2018<\/span>Select Payee Manually\u2019<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. When asked if you\u2019d like to \u2018repeat a similar\u00a0transfer to this payee\u2019, select \u2018<\/span>Issue Transfer Card\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. When asked to select the payee\u2019s financial institution, choose \u2018<\/span>\u4e09\u4e95\u4f4f\u53cb\u2019 <\/span><\/b>(SMBC Bank).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. When asked to enter the first character of the payee\u2019s branch name, choose \u2018<\/span>\u30a2<\/span><\/b>\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. When asked to select the payee\u2019s branch name, choose \u2018<\/span>\u30a2\u30aa\u30a4\u2019<\/span><\/b>\u00a0 (Aoi Branch).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Select the option to make an \u2018<\/span>Ordinary Deposit\u2019.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  11. When prompted, enter your <\/span>Account Number<\/span><\/b>. This is unique to you, and can be found in your MobalPay MyAccount.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  12. To confirm the details you\u2019ve entered, select \u2018<\/span>Next<\/span><\/b>\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  13. When asked to enter your name in Katakana, you can choose \u2018<\/span>\u82f1\u6570\u5b57\u5207\u66ff\u2019<\/span><\/b> (Alphanumeric Switching) to switch to the Latin alphabet.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  14. Enter your name, ensuring that you enter a space (\u30b9\u30da\u30fc\u30b9) between your given name and family name. Select \u2018<\/span>Next<\/span><\/b>\u2019 to progress.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  15. Enter your phone number, if you have one*. Select \u2018<\/span>Next<\/span><\/b>\u2019 to progress.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  16. Enter the amount you\u2019d like to top up, in yen (\u00a5). Select \u2018<\/span>Next<\/span><\/b>\u2019 to progress.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  17. To confirm the details you\u2019ve entered, select \u2018<\/span>Next<\/span><\/b>\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  18. The cash terminals will now open. Insert the amount of cash you specified in the previous step. When you\u2019ve inserted your cash, select \u2018<\/span>Close\u2019 <\/span><\/b>to close the terminals. The machine will now count your cash.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  19. The machine will print a Transfer Card for you, which will then be issued from the \u2018Card\u2019 terminal. Next time you use a Mizuho Bank ATM, you can insert the card to avoid having to enter the payee details and skip straight to the transfer amount! Remember to take your receipt too \u2013 your top-up will be reflected in your MobalPay balance within two working days.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Most banks will charge a small fee for using their services to top up. You can find a full breakdown of each bank\u2019s fees <\/a><\/span>here.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    *If you don\u2019t yet have a Japanese phone number, you can enter \u2018070-1234-5678′ at this step. This means that the bank won\u2019t be able to contact you if anything goes wrong with the cash transfer, so we\u2019d recommend getting a SIM with a real Japanese phone number.
