Required frequencies for network coverage:
The Mobal ‘Japan Voice+Data eSIMs’ utilize the NTT Docomo network.
The primary 3G / 4G frequencies used within Japan by this network are as follows:
3G Band 1 – 2100MHz
4G Band 1 – 2100MHz
We would therefore recommend using a device that supports these 3G / 4G frequencies at minimum.
The network also supports the following additional frequencies:
3G Band 6 – 800MHz
3G Band 19 – 800MHz
4G Band 3 – 1800MHz
4G Band 19 – 800MHz
4G Band 21 – 1500MHz
The 3G Band 6 frequency and the 3G/4G Band 19 frequencies can offer improved network coverage in mountainous regions / inside buildings etc.
If your device supports the 4G Band 21 frequency (in addition to the 4G Band 3 frequency) then you may also receive improved cellular data coverage in some cities.
For the best possible coverage, we would recommend using a device that supports the primary frequencies we first mentioned (the 3G Band 1 – 2100MHz / 4G Band 1 – 2100MHz frequencies) in addition to as many of the other frequencies shown above as possible.
Handset Compatibility
Due to the wide range of handsets that are available on the market (and the different versions of each handset type that are often offered by different suppliers), we do not offer a compatibility checking service, but we do have a regularly-updated list of some of the most popular eSIM-compatible devices here.
If you are not sure if your device has been fully unlocked (to accept eSIMs from alternative service providers) or you wish to ensure that your device supports the required frequencies for network coverage, we would recommend that you query this with the original retailer / service provider you purchased the device from.
